Credit Card Exchange Scam
For a number of years now I've used a Halifax 'Clarity' Credit Card, because of its financial benefits, when travelling in Europe: http://www.halifax.co.uk/creditcards/clarity-card/
Some years ago I notice in Switzerland that before I entered my pin I was asked whether I wanted to pay in £ or in SF. Needless to say paying in £s had a very disadvantageous exchange rate.
Last year in Poland I encountered the same thing. However I had never hitherto met a similar problem in Italy.
A couple of days ago OH & I had lunch in an Osteria in Venice. When I went to pay our bill by credit card I was handed the machine to put in our pin - and only afterwards (because I hadn't checked) realised that we had been charged in £s and not €s . When I complained to the waiter he informed me it was 'automatic'. So I told him (in my best Italian) that we live in Italy and that we know it's not 'automatic'. As it happened I probably came out better in the end as he didn't get the tip I was going to give him.
So the moral of this story is "Check carefully before you put your Credit Card pin into the machine" even in Italy.
