It depends on the KW and Regione. If it's not an EU vehicle (e.g. a grey import from Japan) it will be very expensive. You will need to budget a minimum of €500 and as much as €800 in my experience. Go to the driving school on the roundabout in Comunanza as Nicola there has lots of experience of registering foreign cars.

....or don't bother like a lot of Ex Brits, Insure it with Stuart Collins and ignore Road Tax & MOT. Much cheaper.

Until you have an accident Flip and then you're in a whole heap of the brown stuff. No MOT, no insurance because you didn't have your MOT.
Where I live they are clamping down like mad. Every time I go out in the car there are Carabinieri stopping people. There are lots of other East Europeans who live here and never tax, MOT and insure their cars hence the clampdown.

Re: Registering a Uk car here
The MOT thing is a bit of a grey area, as strictly speaking, according to interpretation of the law, Insurance is not invalid even if not current MOT certificate in place, the wording only refers to a vehicle being roadworthy.
Now I wouldn't wish to argue the point with Caribiniere, knowing how pedantic they can be, but a Brit we know who has had his UK registered car here for at least 6 years and says he has checked with his insurance and says it's OK.
Well you take your choice.
P.S. I do not condone this method and our cars are Italian registered.

Re: Registering a Uk car here
Well it might be OK for his UK insurance company but it's definitely against Italian law and they can seize the vehicle. It happened to someone I know in Marche after they left it parked on the side of the road while they went back to the UK. When they came back the Polizia Stradale had decided it was unroadworthy and towed it to a nearby garage where it stayed accruing a big bill for 2 years!
An extreme example but true!

Re: Registering a Uk car here
OK now i am confused! if you take a car to Italy and leave it there for 6 years it must have had a "sorn" completed otherwise you have to keep the tax and mot up to date which means the car is completely unregistered!! isn't that illegal? or am I missing something?

Yes, it's illegal in Italy. Who knows for sure what it is in England and it doesn't really matter as the car is in italy!

Re: Registering a Uk car here
Vehicle Excise Duty (wrongly known as Road Tax) and MOT test only apply if your car is being used on UK roads. If you take it abroad you must declare it for SORN or permanent Export, otherwise you will get fined automatically for Excise Duty annually, you will not get fined for not having an MOT unless you once again use the vehicle on UK roads. The Catch 22 is you can't get the VED done without a valid MOT certificate.

Re: Registering a Uk car here
But since the car isn't registered in any country that must mean it cannot be legally insured?

Re: Registering a Uk car here
I have just had a look at the Stuart Collins web site and it insures UK registered cars, which if you sorn a car it is no longer a uk registered car.

Re: Registering a Uk car here
All cars in Italy (regardless of whether they are registered in the UK) must have a valid revisione (Italian MOT) so the car is definitely illegal here.
Plus after a car being in Italy for one year it must be registered here so illegal on two counts.

Re: Registering a Uk car here
SORN refers to Stautory Off Road Notice, which only means it is not being used/kept on UK roads for the purpose of Excise Duty.

Re: Registering a Uk car here
Thanks Gala but i don't want to bring a car to Italy we drive over every year and back again. If we did want a car permanently in Italy (and we might need to as we get older!)we would buy an Italian registered car.

I agree in that it would be the most sensible thing to do
