Propogating Rose Cuttings
I'm looking for advice on the best way to propagate rose cuttings. Simon has brought some back from my Dad's house in the UK and as the house is up for sale I really want them to work. They are rambling roses, no idea of their name. Do I need rooting powder? Is there such a thing over here in Italy? Thanks in anticipation.

Re: Propogating Rose Cuttings
The way that seems to work when I have done it is put your cuttings with thorns and lower leaves removed (snip a bit off the bottom if been cut for a while) in a small pot with potting compost or normal 'Terra' in bags form Italy making sure the bottom is well covered, I usually cover bottom third and cover with either a plastic bag, cut 2litre plastic bottle or large jar so you create a mini green house. Make sure it is well watered and out of direct sunlight. Best time is autumn or spring i.e.not when hot. Good luck.

Re: Propogating Rose Cuttings
The advice given by Flip is good and the traditional one and it would certainly work if you take good care of humidity levels, but I have this friend, a keen gardener, who gets amazing results by using potatoes and not only with roses. I found an explanation of the method and I can say that I have seen some great results http://homeguides.sfgate.com/propagate-roses-using-potatoes-23904.html

Re: Propogating Rose Cuttings
I take, mine late Sept / early to mid Oct... I use large 5ltr pots fill th a mix of free draining soil and compost mix and put 5 cuttings in a pot Cuttings should be approx 8 - 9 inches in length, bottom cut below a bud and straight...top one at a slant above a bud for run off. Remove lower leaves and insert cutting approx 3 - 4" deep. I use HR powder bought back from UK you are welcome to some if you wish. I then bury the pots up to their necks in a raised bed out of direct sunlight and water well.. Last year had 120 takes from 150 cuttings... it was a good year, you normally have to take many cuttings and be prepared to loose quite a few. The good news is, rambling roses are usually easy to grow from cuttings. Good luck. And oh yes, forgot to say the cuttings, hopefully would have rooted by the following Spring and will be ready to plant out that Autumn.

Re: Propogating Rose Cuttings
Thank you so much, Flip, Gala and Angie. I have heard of the potato method from another forum as well! I have the cuttings now, so will have to find somewhere cool and shady, difficult in our garden as it's exposed to full sun. I will let you know how we get on. The house isn't sold yet, so I may get another chance but not sure... so wanted to do the best I could with this lot. Fingers crossed.
Really appreciate you all taking the time to reply.
