Permanent residency for EU citizens
It is likely (but no-one really knows) that permanent residents of Italy will have the right to stay in Italy after Brexit.
A permanent citizen is an EU citizen who has resided here for the last 5 years continously (and can shows this) and can show they had the means to support themselves during those 5 years. This last requirement is fairly new and not in the original legislation. It has come about due to a consitutional court ruling and could cause a lot of people a problem. If you have been resident here but not filing a tax return or if your income was too low to file, then you will have a hard time demonstrating your ability to support yourself over the last 5 years. A big enough bank balance would do it but remember that if your account is in the UK then you should have been filing a return here to declare the account - tricky.

La sent. della Corte di giustizia dell’UE (Grande Sezione) del 21 dicembre 2011 nei procedimenti riuniti C-424/10 e C-425/10, ha poi affermato che
1) non si può ritenere che il cittadino dell’Unione che abbia compiuto un soggiorno di più di cinque anni sul territorio dello Stato membro ospitante sulla sola base del diritto nazionale di tale Stato abbia acquisito il diritto al soggiorno permanente in conformità a tale
disposizione se, durante tale soggiorno, egli non soddisfaceva le condizioni di cui all’art. 7, n. 1, della stessa direttiva.
2) I periodi di soggiorno del cittadino di uno Stato terzo sul territorio di uno Stato membro, compiuti prima dell’adesione di detto Stato terzo all’Unione europea, devono, in assenza di disposizioni specifiche contenute nell’atto di adesione, essere presi in considerazione ai fini dell’acquisizione del diritto di soggiorno permanente a norma dell’art.16, n. 1, della direttiva 2004/38, purché siano stati compiuti in conformità alle condizioni di cui all’art. 7, n. 1, della stessa direttiva.

And it used to be 6.041 for a single person. Interesting how they think it now costs less to get by than 5 years ago.

True. I don't know if each province/region can set their own figures. This was from Arezzo.
