Agapanthus Empty Agapanthus

Post by Angela Fuller Fri Jul 19, 2013 6:01 am

I was just wondering why a large clump of agapanthus has no flowerbuds this year.  Planted it 6 yrs ago and it has flowered every year up until this one.  Do they need lifting and dividing every 3 / 4 yrs or maybe, like the butterflies it's a weather related thing ?  I have another different variety of agapanthus planted 2 yrs ago that had 5 flowers last year, this year one !  Any advice much appreciated.......

I would say that it is weather related and that they have been water stressed at the wrong (growing) time. It hasbeen raining too much this year! Also, check whether they are getting full sun. Some other plants may have grown too much and they are not allowing full sun to the agapanthus. I would not touch the plants otherwise. They seem to be happy in groups.

Yes Gala too much rain and everything in the plant world competing. The clump of agapanthus is under a wisteria which has invaded the house, garden etc and I have to keep cutting it back, but this year it's a job to do every 2 weeks, all the rain has made everyting grow like triffid's we have had a season of thistles here, never before and they are 7' high, crazy !

I don't think that we should worry too much this year if we get a few casualties or certain plants do not get any or very few blooms. Weather conditions have been exceptional.mI had to replace a few potted plants which had been thriving for the past 5 years and the rose bushes are not as prolific as they have been in the past... Let's hope that we will have better weather next year.

Yes Gala, I am going to try some 'Spencer' Sweet Pea varieties next year recommended by a friend whose relative helped introduce them, longer stemmed bigger flowers, just hope the scent is as good as ones I have now. Growing flowers to sell but a difficult market to crack......Next year I hope to have a weekly coffee / tea session to encourage some buyers and will offer a PYO bucket of flowers for anyone who wants them.....

That's a good idea. Keep us informed. You could also try local churches and wedding planners. Churches have small budgets, but they need flowers on a regular basis and they may also put you in touch with people organising special celebrations. If you start creating those contacts, they may surprise you...
