When it was our turn in the Budget Car Hire queue in Pisa in June, the woman on the desk practically exploded when I refused to buy excess insurance (We have Ins4carhire) and repeatedly told us we would need a separate insurance, apart from the usual excess insurance,  simply to cover the cost of a breakdown vehicle if one was necessary. She insisted that no yearly insurance covered this cost and kept asking me if we really wanted to take that risk by not buying more insurance. She was so insistent she did get me worried, but her aggressive attitude annoyed me so much I was determined not to buy anything from her. I told OH that if we broke down he would have to mend it himself (which he has done a couple of times with car hire!) I did check with Insurance4carhire later, who assured me I was definitely covered for this. Just a warning not to be taken in by this. They always mention the excess insurance but I had never come across this "extra" excess on top of the other one before. She looked like she was willing us to break down and get our come uppance when she finally gave us the key.

Well done you la alma standing up to the hard sell.  Respect Smile

'Supercover' is a real scam and can almost double the cost of hiring a car in Italia.  We also used to have Ins4carhire (luckily we never had to use it).  More recently OH has got a credit card and one of the perks is cover for excess insurance on hire cars.

Incidentally I remember some years ago buying a video camera from Comet.  They went ballistic when I told them I didn't want the 'optional' extended guarantee. The manager was called and it all became really quite unpleasant Sad

.... the last 2 times I've hired from Avis in England they've popped a small extra of about £7 on my card after the event.  Is this some new scam?

We have not had this problem with the car hire cos and we use Pisa a lot but I know from talking to some of them that business has been down over the last year so it doesn't surprise me to hear about hard selling. We have had excess insurance from insurance4car hire for some years now and can't praise them highly enough. We have made 3 claims and they have processed them promptly and without quibble each time. Claims experience is the real test of a insurance company. That said I am intrigued to find that you can get this cover as a perk with a credit card. Could you give more info please; is it specific to one card or is it a general thing?

Don't think they are that desperate for business.Recently booked a hire car for 2 weeks at Perugia airport using my travelling partners credit card(I don't possess one) with me as a named driver.Upon arrival we were very rudely told this was not possible and next customer please.Did explain this on booking and were happy to leave the credt card until our return.
Plan B was to attempt to get my uk car that had been there for 12 months out of the car park.Parking used to be free but is now 500 euro per year.
Nice man at Perugia airport waived any fees and also called the local garage who arrived within 10 minutes to start the car and also inflate 2 flat tyres for the grand cost of 20 euro.
Not sure if I was a bit of a numpty regarding car hire, but I love the people at the airport..back soon hopefully.
