LACRIME DI SAN LORENZO - PERSEIDS 10 TO 13 AUGUST 2013
Get yourselves some comfy lounge chairs, a glass (or two) of prosecco and get ready to watch one of nature's most spectacular celestial shows: The Perseids or "Perseidi". The show starts tomorrow night, 10th August, Saint Lawrence's festivity, hence the name, "Lacrime di San Lorenzo" or the saint's tears. As all great nature's shows, it is free and breathtaking, all courtesy of a comet that is slowly disintegrating. Here is some information from an Italian website, or Google "Perseids". Enjoy!

We have watched these for many, many a year and you can see them long before the official dates (but not quite as many). However the clouds here in Abruzzo might have to go... Anyone out there for their first time - you need to be patient and certainly a proseco or 2 and a very comfortable chair helps.... Oh and don't forget the mozzie spray if they are about...

Yes, Steve, it is a yearly even which has been observed for more than 2000 years and it is supposed to keep on going until 4400 and something, but we will not be here to check if this is correct. At that time the comet will hit the Earth and God knows what may happen. Meanwhile, we can enjoy it as long as there is good visibility and the mozzies do not give us a hard time. You were right advising about the spray! Perseids

The night of the 12th into the 13th August is supposed to be the best time this year, though I saw two last night (well before midnight). If you " align your right shoulder to the pole star, with Scorpio on your left you should be facing the Mare Tirreneo" and that is where most action is supposed to occur (local Lazio rag)
