Fascism and the Italian language
I've just seen a brief extract on Repubblica TV of a documentary shown at the Venice film festival entitled, I think, 'Me Ne Frego'. It seems a fascinating insight into how Mussolini attempted to purge foreign words from the Italian language - most of them French or English. Many of the enforced changes failed to stick but some have become part of the daily language today:
Chauffeur - Autista
Affiche - Manifesto
Booking - Prenotazione
Croissant - Cornetto
Regisseur - Regista
This is interesting in itself but this now mostly explains something which has always puzzled me. The French continue to fight a ferocious rearguard action against the 'invasion' of English words into their language while the Italians seem not to care. Now I'm beginning to think the reason is it is a reaction against the legacy of Fascism which tried so hard to do the same 80 years ago. I would appreciate a 'heads-up' should this documentary appear on RAI at some point.

Re: Fascism and the Italian language
Thanks Neil.
Like I've probably said we don't watch TV here at all here, but I did have cause to look at the RAI site a while back and noted it did seem they have catch-up (replay), perhaps Repubblica TV does... Or if you know the program title, it may appear on YouTube?
