EHIC CHANGES FROM 1ST JULY 2014

Post by Cassini on Sun Jun 22, 2014 2:23 pm

Perhaps you are all aware of this?

From the 1st July 2014 EHIC covers health charges only to the level of a national of the country you are in. In Italy you must pay the ticket. In France you pay the 40% covered by a Mutuel.  The NHS will no longer refund the local charge made to you in an EU state.

It seems as if Insurance is needed for a 'long stay' in order not to incur these costs.  It is no longer possible to rely on the EHIC and refund for health consultations or emergencies.

I believe changes have also been made to NHS entitlements to early retired residents - necessitating additional insurance. It isn't very easy to track down the information. But the NHS website has a link to EHIC changes.

Neither had we until we needed to use the EHIC in an  emergency in France and have been surprised to be charged for all subsequent visits for aftercare. It is very hidden on the internet. You can track down a Parliamentary statement about it in April this year for full details.
