Kefir Empty Kefir

Post by Angela Fuller Thu Apr 09, 2015 5:02 am

Does anyone know of anywhere local or close to the Amandola area in Marche where you can buy Kefir grains....(thinking of you Geo).  I know you can buy Kefir milk (made with cows milk) in Eurospin, but friend wants to make her own using goats milk. Many thanks in advance.

No, but thanks for pointing me to something I'd never heard of and now know a little more about it - very interesting.

Sorry, meant to say Kefir when added to goats milk is much easier to digest and lower in casein than when made with cows milk....Glad you have extended your wealth of knowledge even further Steve..... Smile Smile

Hi Angie.

There may be a possibility of getting it in the health food shop in Servigliano, but not sure.

Otherwise try getting in touch with Eros, as although he mainly makes cheese, he has his own herds of cows and goats for milking, which he supplies to the dairies.

What one needs to remember in so called 'wonder supplements', is that unless you change your whole diet and exercise regularly, the effect of any additive to ones diet, in the vain hope you can carry on as before but by adding these things, you will not develop high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes is a fallacy only designed to get the suppliers more money.
Look at your diet, consult a dietician or doctor, change your lifestyle, stop drinking too much alcohol, eating fatty foods need I go on. If these change don't affect a change take Statins or similar, but don't rely on an 'Additive' to do it for you. Also remember that everyone's metabolism, genetic footprint etc is different and what works for one will not necessarily work for others, but dietary and lifestlye change is the first step for keeping healthy, not adding stuff to existing diet.
Oh and any additive that says 'can help with depression' is a total lie (as per the Kefir), no natural remedy can help with Mental Health issues.

Angie, dear Angie, I totally agree with Flip.  We've had your 'Nuts' thread and now we have your 'Kefir' thread.  Please listen to the very good advice that many of us on this forum are giving you,

Ghiro, do you not think I am well aware already of all the advice given.  However, I am interested in all sorts of 'healthy' remedies as well as going  down the Dr Dr route.  I can see no harm in this and will continue to post for those on the forum that are more open minded.

Angie, this Article gives sound advice regarding the type of food that can help to control hypercholestemia; however, and as we keep on saying, diet is only part of the remedy. Exercise, medication and proper medical following are all important. Something as simple and cheap as oats works great. Home made yoghurt with fruit and a good tablespoon of oat bran is a perfect way to start your day.
Also, go for a long walk every day, 45 minutes minimum. Walking can be as effective as any other type of exercise. This is what most doctors advise. Actually, a beautiful promenade along the beach in my hometown has been renamed "The Cholesterol Promenade" Razz

Thx Gala, but I eat oats every day, make myown yoghurt and walk every day- I have a young dog thatneeds exercising.  I take the equivalant of a statin and do intend to seek follow up tests etc so I think I am doing all the right things.  Having worked in the health service for many years including recent times in a multi-disiplinery team including dieticians I think I have a reasonable knowledge of right and wrong...Just because I choose a combination of treatments including eating nuts and taking kefir in my diet along with prescribed meds is surely not a bad thing...everything in moderation !

Angie we are, I trust, all ''open minded'' to most if not all subjects discussed on here, but please don't assume that some people who hold a different viewpoint to yourself are automatically against you.

Sorry, Angie, but it is not a new discovery. Perhaps this article http://allergiesandyourgut.com/2015/07/04/psychobiotics-your-gut-bacteria-your-mood/ is one of the most recent on the topic. And yes, everything helps, but depression is a serious illness that must be treated by specialists and Prozac is not a panacea. Each case is different and yes, it is certain that an imbalance in serotonin levels can trigger depression. Something as simple as not getting enough sunlight during the day can cause depression and this is why Scandinavia has a high percentage of people suffering from this ailment. If you do a little search using the words "serotonin boosters" you will find plenty of information.

Thanks Angela, but as Gala says,no amount of Kefir or any prescribed medication can 'cure' depression; it may address certain chemical imbalances within the body but that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Still keep digging you may come across something to support your view point.

Of course we can Angie.  Nobody is denying you that.  After all it's your life.  Just so long as you're 100% confident that the advice you're following is the very best advice available.

I find the subject of natural products with medicinal properties quite interesting but I don't necessarily agree with the hype surrounding them Flip.  I have only posted information for the benefit of people with an interest in the subject, I would never infer that people should not seek proper medical advice.
