Forte dei marmi - is it like this

Post by stevegwmonkseaton on Sun Feb 22, 2015 10:47 am

I came across this link as someone asked about going there at Easter for a football tournament. Is it really like this? I've often thought that money coming into an area may not always be a good thing for those that don't have a personal fortune of their own. Could we all get priced out of our homes in Italy. Arrow

Steve I think you may find that article an 'inflated' opinion of the area or complete bollix, which ever you choose. That area does have some very nice, lavish properties but there are lots of empty villas and Holiday homes especially out of season. Also the type of lavish settings aledgedly said  to be a favourite with our Russian friends would probably be out of our price range, unless your property is in the €1 -5 million range.
We regularly go there and TBH have never come across little Moscow, most of the people there seem to be Italian or British.
Yet another sloppy Journo piece I fear.

It was more the impact of having wealth in the area. London is probably a very good example of the impact wealth in an area can become costly for everyone living there. I could see the same happening anywhere to be honest.
As to the people having to visit there, I've told them it's out of season, so likely very different in terms of weather and accommodation etc... Although I have to say, compared to here the weather looks superb there for that time of year.

Steve, I tend to agree with Flip and the article is an obvious exaggeration. And whenever We are at Bagni di Lucca we go to Forte dei Marmi once or even twice a week. Yes, there are some Russians and Ukrainians, but they are not the majority of foreigners. You can hear a large variety of languages spoken. There are a couple of expensive restaurants and hotels, but we have paid similar prices in other Italian cities.mYes, there are luxury boutiques, but also a market with some very nice things at quite reasonable prices. We always go to a lovely coffee shop which is full of Italians who obviously reside in the area. Property prices on the Versilia are substantially higher than inland and it has always been the case. Forte dei Marmi is a good place to visit, so don't allow this silly article to put you off.

Thanks Gala, I don't think it will put us off as we likely will not get to go... However the people concerned will most definitely be going, so it's nice to hear something good about the place and I'm sure they will enjoy it.

I largely agree with Gala and, like her, thoroughly enjoy the market there (huge and circular!).

However some English friends, who have had an apartment there for many years, now refer to FdM as 'Moscow on Sea'.

I think that there are not as many Russian millionaires around as a couple of years ago. A sign of the times, perhaps.....SadSad

They are not very successful, but do try to keep these criminal elements out... Obviously the Spanish will take anyone as they need the money - dirty or not!

Perhaps the reason why some of these people love to come to the south of Spain is not only because of the climate, but also because of its proximity to Gibraltar (I do think that it is still a British territory or protectorate) where they are given all the facilities o launder their money... Touché? Razz

Southern Spain, UK criminals, we seem to use it as a new Australia and Gibraltar is just the over spill...

Steve, sorry, but you are becoming boring and repetitive by this hijacking of the thread. We were discussing Forte dei Marmi, a lovely seaside town in Tuscany. A humorous comment about where the Russian money that used to be around the area is gone can be fun, but the rest is becoming unnecessary. Sorry again, but end of the thread for me. Very Happy:D:D
