We are on the verge of a new car purchase here in Italy and would welcome any input as to procedures;
can you bargain?; do they take trade-ins?; (2000 Subaru Forester 130,000KM); will they take a trade-in of foreign (EU) registry and handle the paperwork for “importing” the trade-in?; etc. Wife is resident so that is not an issue. Any info appreciated.
Thanks,
Fred

of course they take trade ins they'll turn their nose up at a foreign registered car and say they have to do lots of paper work that it's worth nothing if rhd..then you say ok thanks goodbye then they'll say oh yes but we could do it.you remind them that YOU ARE NOT ASKING you are telling them that this is a sine qua non or they take the old car or they don't sell the new one...simple as that

We just bought a new car recently and yes you can haggle, as Car sales are struggling recently so  you may be able to get 10% of list at least, also look around as Fiat do some good offers on certain models.
As far as Part Exchange goes on your old car if you have a UK registered RHD car then you will find it very difficult, nigh impossible, to get it as part of the deal no matter what Sebastiano says (especially a 15 year old one with heaps of mileage, no offence), I know I tried 4 dealers and not one would do it as no demand for RHD and if they have to ship it out the cost would mean you would virtually give the car away. If it is LHD all said they would take it in part ex as paperwork easy and cost only a few hundred € to them, which they would include in the part ex value.
I eventually drove mine back to the UK (an excuse for a holiday) and sold it to ''We Buy Any Car.Com'' in a day and got a very decent price, in fact more than I was thinking.
Hope this is useful.

We part-exchanged our italian reg RHD car. Admittedly it was for scrap rather than something they would ever sell on but they gave us a 2k discount (notionally) for it and handled all the paperwork.

We bought a 'new' (first registered by the dealer) Panda 4x4 and ended up getting about 3k off the list price of 18k.

Thanks to all who have responded. Understanding the parameters of the process here is a good part of the exercise. The Subaru, although "ancient", is in excellent shape mechanically, with the bumps and bruises of Italian parking lots and is a LHD. Saw us through a number of Austrian Alp winters with snow tires and the AWD.
Looking at a Fiat 500X AWD diesel through a Fiat dealer in Aulla. Feel a bit more comfortable given the information received so far. Thanks again for the input.

Is the Scoobie UK reg?  We are about to sell our RAV4 and return to the UK so a UK reg car to drive back in would be handy.
