Nuts....
First topic message reminder :
I have been told to lower my cholesterol by the doctor here. I already have a low cholesterol diet and have done for years and eat mainly fish and chicken. I have been sent a link to a BBC programme all about lowering cholesterol by a friend and it seems oats and certain nuts are the way to go..... However, I find nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds) very expensive to buy here, even in Eurospin ! Does anyone know of any cheap suppliers that sell big bags at a reasonable cost ? Many thx.

Re: Nuts....
Sorry to hear that, LL. Really frightening! Particularly when you consider the high cost of having to look after a patient who has suffered a stroke or a heart attack which could have been prevented through a proper diagnose and treatment. Now I understand why so many British people move to Italy or Spain as soon as they reach retirement age. The reason is not only the climate, or the lifestyle. Healthcare must also be an important factor.

Re: Nuts....
I'm a retired Consultant Radiologist so have no expertise in the current finer details of cholesterol, LDL & HDL. However, as I said before, I take a statin. Not only do they lower your cholesterol but (perhaps more importantly) they clean out your arteries. I am also well aware that certain statins cause significant side effects (liver, muscles etc) in certain patients,
LL's analysis of the current NHS is spot on.
My father (also a doctor) smoked like a chimney and drank like a fish all his life. He had his first heart attack aged 46! He subsequently had bypass surgery, TB, a burst meckel's diverticulum, histoplasmosis and a ruptured aortic aneurysm. He died peacefully aged 89!
My personal approach to medicine has always been coloured by the following story:
Doctor: You must stop smoking, stop drinking and adopt a healthy diet.
Patient: And will I live longer?
Doctor: Not necessarily - but it will cetainly feel like it!

Re: Nuts....
Great comment, Ghiro. We also have the same story in a Spanish version. The only difference is in the final doctor's answer. Ours goes like this: "Yes, quite possibly. But you will pray to God for an earlier death."

Re: Nuts....
I am deleting the original post as it was in answer to a highly offensive and unwarranted post from another member, which has been deleted, at a later stage, by a fellow moderator.
Perhaps the lesson here is that a forum is as good as its members are and that good manners and respect are vital. If everyone knows how to behave, moderators are not needed.

Re: Nuts....
Totally agree with Gala re Steve's obnoxiousness and lack of any good manners. There is absolutely no need for it and shows a very childish mentality. I too will ignore him.

This is not quite right and if it's the case for you, then change your doctor... Gala has no idea as she has never had the pleasure of being English or living in the country (as they would not allow her type in)... I would say personally they should keep undesirables like her out, but as I have indicated, they are not too fussy these days...
Steve, I normally do like and appreciate your input on this 'friendly' forum but I find your above comment and others made on this thread really not at all not nice and quite upsetting. If you disagree with anothers opinion surely best to discuss the matter and not to throw insults, as for age, you cannot be far away from Gala's....just not nice.....apologies needed......

Re: Nuts....
I know this is nothing to do with 'nuts', but having been in the Italian Health System for 6 weeks approx, I have already been called for screening for 2 x tests at my local community hospital....that's efficiency for you so I am impressed....They are both normal routine tests you normally wait for months / a year to have in the UK.

We’re all going ‘nuts’ in this thread. In fairness to Steve though, I think all posts responding to his/her post should be removed

I have removed my original answer to Steve's post which was highly offensive and unfair to me, as that post has now been deleted by a fellow moderator. We, the moderators, should not be forced to delete inflammatory and unwarranted posts. As I always say, self-moderation is the best type of moderation and it has to do with respect and good manners.
I think that a few of us are still waiting for an apology, but I do not think that it will ever come. This is not the first time that these unfortunate things happen...

I deleted the post because it was offensive and others felt the same way. Do you want to go back to the same thing that was going on in ItalyMag, where infighting was the norm?
I think we have only deleted a few posts on this site since the inception. Normally there has to be very little action from the moderators.

Re: Nuts....
@ Mods - lost-in-translation There’s no need to defend or justify why you deleted Steve’s post. My suggestion was that ALL posts referring to or commenting on the deleted post should be deleted i.e. i.e. all posts after Gala’s post on the 5th August at 10.01pm. This way the matter is closed and we can return to discussing the original topic. Perhaps it’s also better to deal with this type of issue behind the scenes to avoid spreading ‘negative’ vibes on the forum and creating ‘groups’. Just my humble opinion…

There are no real groups here. just normal good conversations. Express your opinion in a reasonable way and no problem.
The original posts to the attack can be deleted by those who put them there, but I found no reason to action that.

Re: Nuts....
According to this, Kefir may well help lower cholesterol...
Kefiran may offer cholesterol-lowering benefits, according to a study published in the September 2010 issue of the "Journal of Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis." In the study, rabbits fed a high-cholesterol diet supplemented with kefiran for eight weeks developed significantly fewer arterial plaques. Kefiran prevented white blood cells from migrating into the linings of arteries, a process that initiates atherosclerotic plaque formation. Additionally, supplementation with the kefir extract resulted in lower levels of cholesterol in the liver. Researchers concluded that kefiran was readily absorbed into the bloodstream and lowered cholesterol levels by inhibiting inflammation and exerting antioxidant effects.

Re: Nuts....
There are many ways to assist in controlling cholesterol and triglycerides through an appropriate diet and exercise and kefir certainly helps; however, if hipercholestemia is genetic, proper medication and regular controls are needed. Angie, I beg you, go and see a specialist.
Sorry, I insist so much because, in spite of doing all the right things for years, my husband is having to undergo a catheterization in a few days, possibly followed by a stent implant. He is in the right hands and we managed to avoid a stroke, which would have happened if we had left the problem unattended...

Re: Nuts....
As Gala says, all these natural remedies/additives are all well and good, but Pharmaceutical companies don't spend Billions each year on research if a bag of Macadamia Nuts would have the same effect. With any Health issues go and consult a Medical Professional, Homoeopathy etc is for the birds, there is no substitute for a well trained Doctor.
P.S. Angie you are not a Rabbit.

Re: Nuts....
Gala, I am sure all will go well with husbands op. Good they have actioned it and hopefully he will make a quick recovery and soon start to feel the benefits of whatever the procedure. I do listen to your advice and will go down the path suggested as soon as I have sorted a few other health issues out so thx again for your input and concern.
Flip, A high percentage of the pharmaceutical industry research is based on natural products. I agree that homoepathy is probably based on faith rather than fact. As far as kefir is concerned I know of many people who have benefited and are still benefiting from taking it for all sorts of conditions in a goat /cows milk yogurt type drink so I wouldn't knock it.
As for not being a rabbit...untrue, however, I only get my rabbit costume out for very special occasions !

Re: Nuts....
Thank you, Angie. I am sure that he will be right, as the new medication is working and he will also have the procedure to have the artery narrowing fixed.
Glad to hear that you are going to have your cholesterol problem thoroughly assessed.
Yes, you are right, many pharmaceutical products come from nature. The classic example is aspirin, or acetylsalicilic acid, which comes from the willow leaves and has been used in medicine since Hypocrates times...

And what about penicillin which originated from the chance discovery of a mould which inhibited bacteria - how many millions of lives has this drug saved?

Yes Hazy and Gala. OH has studied pharmacology in the past and can add a massivly long list of plants that have produced various beneficial compounds. However, the list is endless so wont bore you but, herbalism has played a huge role in the development of most of the medications we take every day along with as Hazy says the discovery of penicillin and such-like...
