Prefer a french coffee as against a italian one. Use the French press, with a pinch of salt and a half teaspoon of cocoa powder. We have a couple of Albanian friends and they always ask for this!!!

Well...yes and no. Generaliziations are dangerous. In Italy, we can get excellent coffee, like the one served at http://www.santeustachioilcaffe.it/en/ and some terrible coffee, depending on where you go. Regarding Starbucks... I avoid it like the plague. To get good coffee in both France or the UK is a difficult task, not worth the effort. I prefer to drink tea. In Spain, you get the two extremes, but I know where to get excellent coffee, although a good cappuccino is difficult to find. In the USA... Italian coffee shops and restaurants generally serve some decent coffee, In San Francisco, I try to go to North Beach, the Italian quarter, whenever I crave for a good coffee. There is a coffee shop on Columbus Avenue, called Puccini (what else?) and one of the ladies is from Bagni di Lucca, so we always have a pleasant chat, which is something that goes very well with a good cappuccino. What I refuse to do is to drink coffee or tea from a paper or plastic cup. It tastes like paper or plastic. It is like drinking wine or spirits from a metal cup... And tea tastes much better if you drink it from a nice porcelain cup. Snobbish? I don't think so... I think that I would call it good taste...
Oh! I forgot. Dinner with cappuccino? That would deserve the death penalty or, at least, a good flogging! Twisted Evil

Interesting! Smile  Totally agree with Gala about paper or plastic cups.  An abomination!

My heart drops as I cross the border into France or Switzerland as I know the coffee will be dreadful.  Sorry I can't agree Geotherm. Sad

In the UK, like Gala, I avoid the 'chains'.  Who wants a half pint of cappuccino?  It's the intensity of the coffee, not the volume, that counts!

A confession. Shocked  After lunch in Italy I really enjoy a macchiato.  The Italians may well feel 'it doesn't agree with the digestion' - but it does with mine!

Put it this way, I have rarely had a bad coffee served to me in Italy, where I have rarely had a good coffee served to me in the UK.
The UK just don't get Italian style coffee it's all Americanised for them and, no offence to any Americans, but as far as food and drink go the USA has a lot to learn.

Again, I think that generalizations are not fair. I have travelled many times to the USA and I spend a good amount of time there. In some places, food is terrible, but if you go to the San Francisco area or certain enclaves in New York, or Portland, you will be pleasantly surprised. Actually, the best Italian restaurant outside Italy is Peasant in New York's Little Italy. Delicious Tuscan food.

Undoubtedly - though it depends what you call coffee.  A litre of ersatwz milk with some coffee flavouring and cinnamon is not coffee in my book.  Never been into a starbucks so cant comment.  Have tried Costa - repulsive muck, and Caffe Nero - slight less repulsive but ridiculously expensive (nice apricot croissants though).  I like an espresso - what most tourists look at and say ' there's some mud in the bottom of my cup - which is impossible to find anywhere else - a ristretto in the UK is still half a cup of coffee.  Even Bar Italia in Soho couldnt manage it.  So yes, you need to be in ITaly and foregt the illys and Lavazzas and go for the Kimbo and the Moak and you'll never look back.....  Of course if you want some boiling brownish water thats been sitting on a hotplate for a month, then Kenco is your choice, but its not coffee.

In the end, it all goes down to a matter of taste. I like the caffetiere coffee and it can be made as strong as you like.
Cardomon coffee is also a lovely flavour, as is Turkish.
