Citizenship for Children born in Italy on it's way?

Post by Admin on Mon Aug 17, 2015 1:57 pm

There are moves afoot to change the way Italian citizenship is given to children. The proposal is to give children born in Italy to 'stranieri' where at least one has lived continuously in Italy for 5 years the opportunity to have Italian citizenship without having to wait until they are 18.

The other type of citizenship would be given to children who arrive here before the age of 12 and have had 5 years of Italian schooling. Those who arrive between the ages of 12 and 18 would need to have had 5 years of schooling and also 6 years of permanent residence in Italy before they could request citizenship.

Another article I read said the proccedure would be that the parents request citizenship on behalf of their children and a note is made on the Italian birth certificate in the first scenario (ius soli temperato).

The proposal has passed scrutiny by the Commission for Consitutional Affairs and will be debated in September.

Good news for us foreign parents of children born in Italy (assuming it passes of course!). More details here.

It is a good and fair initiative and I do hope that the relevant law will be passed.

Well, it has passed the first house. For us EU citizens with children born here, so long as you had permanent right to stay then you request an annotation on your child's birth certificate and that is it!
This all assumes it passes the second house unchanged of course. Fingers crossed.

It looks like this will be sacrificed to persuade the other parties to vote for Civil partnerships - marvellous!

Well, it's being put to the senate again on 15th June. The PD have said they will force a no confidence vote if it doesn't pass. Fingers crossed!

It should be a matter of common sense, so I do trust it will pass this time. There should be an EU law for all EU members and it should grant automatic citizenship to all children born in the country, "Juris solis"is nothing new...

It is a bit daft that someone living abroad who has never even been here can get an Italian passport because their grandparents were Italian and then move here for the free healthcare (used to happen a lot in Tuscany). It seems unfair when we pay taxes here and our daughter was born here and is effectively Italian in every way except blood.
