Organic status

Just checking....but to say you are an organic supplier of wines / oil  /  or any food products you do you need to have the appropriate certification and have a registered number given to you by the 'organic organisation' that you can then label your product with....So many things here are called organic or bio...what is the difference please......

Apparently Organic status is confirmed by COLDIRETTI and AIAB the two main Farming bodies the later to do with Bio Farming. Think you probably need to contact your local representative and ask the question. Obviously you need to be registered and certified or else every Tomaso, Ricardo and Harry will say they are Organic/Bio and charge a premium for their goods.
If anything like the UK you have to prove your soil and methods have been chemical free for at least 5 years to Soil Association standards.

Angie, you do indeed have to be registered with one of the many organic certifying associations (AIAB being one of many but COLDIRETTI is just a farmers union so cannot certify you). Here is a list. You will usually be inspected and the inspector will do a survey but not a soil test. You must then wait the required period, depending upon your crop, pay your annual subs and after the waiting period you can call your products organic (or biologico in Italian) and use your registration number and the logo for the certifying body. Until the waiting period is over you are 'in conversione' which is a recognised state.

There is no difference between organic or bio (biologico). One is the English word and one is the Italian, that is all.

You can claim to be whatever you like (just as you can in the UK) but if you get caught you will be fined. The only legally organic products in Italy are certified by a certifying body and the producer has a registration number. There are all sorts of rules about labelling too. That is where COLDIRETTI or CIA are invaluable as for your miniscule membership fee they have experts who can advise to make sure you stay within the ever changing laws.

We get our biologico certification next summer and are currently (in conversione).
