Wolves

Post by Angela Fuller on Tue Jan 26, 2016 6:26 am

Sadly I have just read 2 dogs have been killed by wolves, I think during the day locally.  The pack of wolves has been seen often roaming around, livestock has been killed...pet owners beware...

I will check V, but maybe in the Force area as they have had problems....goats etc torn apart and packs of the wolves seen during daylight....I can understand  the killlings at night but in daylight ? and lovely dogs being slaughtered....just not at all nice....the wolves must be hungry but why, after a mild autumn ?

The wolves are certainly hungry. Daylight pack hunting is not normal behaviour.

Gala, I wonder if their normal source of food, smaller animals is not available, maybe hunted ? Or when working in a pack they could 'bring down' a deer for exp....another example of a much hunted animal.   Friends nr Force have seen the pack walking through their gardens in daylight and were relieved they had walked their dogs who were snuggled up by the fire....I suppose Force is closer to the mountains but to be on the safe side Bella dog is on house arrest unless we are outside with her......!!!

There is another possibility... And not a nice one. Rabies. Particularly if the slaughtered animals have not been eaten. Although rabies seems to be practically eradicated in Europe, there can be outbreaks, because the virus can be "imported". Not so long ago, there was a case of a puppy illegally brought from Morocco to France via Spain and it caused havoc until they found it. Wild wolves are not vaccinated... And those horrific wolf attacks that are part of folklore have always been caused by rabid animals... I would have the slaughtered dogs tested and meanwhile keep Bella at home, even if she is vaccinated.

I will ask the question Gala as to whether the dogs were eaten but I believe the owners were away when it happened and I am sure any remains would have been buried / got rid of.....Rabies is a ghastly disease....Bella is going to have a trip to the vets to refresh her jabs this week just to be on the safe side.  She has a boyfriend, a local  sheep-dog....doubt if he has had any treatments so better safe than sorry !
