Winter officially starts today!

In Massa Carrara, from today, you are obliged to have 'winter' tyres on your car or have a set of chains on board.

Do other provinces have similar requirements?

It looks as if as from this winter, "snowsocks" are finally allowed in Italy Snowsocks
It is good news as they are very easy to fit on the tyres, at least much easier than the chains.
And they were invented by the Norwegians... who should know what to use for winter driving .

I though most places in Italy you needed snow chains in winter? Here it's from November to March and a lot of people were stopped last year for spot checks and fined if they did not have chains on board...

The regulations are all starting now for the winter. Have just had the winter tyres fitted on the Pajero for this year E750.00:affraid:.no chains carried. Citroen still has them from last year, but also a set of chains as well, as not the gearing or 4wd, to cope with the conditions. Just leave the winter ones on the Citroen, as it does not do enough mileage to keep changing them, plus the softer rubber is great for grip in the summer as well!!

It all depends on your particular area or region, as they have jurisdiction over this. As an example, winter starts on the 15th of October for Val d'Aosta. Generally, you find road signs informing about this.
