Re: Hilarious point of view!
Has all the elements of a totally invented story for someone to write a report on, and factually incorrect too
Re: Hilarious point of view!
Obviously, we don't share the same sense of humour...
Modi, which are the wrong "facts" in the article? Gosh! A tablespoon of Sicilian honey every morning will do wonders for you! .... Better! Make it a full cup !

Re: Hilarious point of view!
Beh a sense of humour is very subjective thing! Its one of those - 'what would the Parisian/Romans/New Yorkers say if.... articles- that is then fabricated to make it 'real'. As to the incorrect - its just not true to say Islam regarded Constantinople as being Rome - for a brief period yes, but certainly not for going on 2000 years!
Re: Hilarious point of view!
Sorry, Modi, but your "facts" are incorrect. Islam did not even exist 2000 years ago. Muhammad was born around 573 A.D. and you should remember the fall of Rome around 476 which marks the end of the Roman Empire. If we consider that Islam starts somewhere around the 700s, Constantinople was all that was left of the Roman Empire. Furthermore, when Charlemagne is crowned Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day of the year 800, his capital city is Aachen (Germany) and not Rome. The author of the article is perfectly well documented and knows what he is talking about.

Re: Hilarious point of view!
Thanks for the history lesson Gaia - after studying history for 40 years I did actually know that This : Now, let us put aside for a second that any reference to “Rome” in the oral-tradition of Islam explicitly refers to the Eastern Roman Empire, is what I take issue with.
Re: Hilarious point of view!
Well, Modi, Islam could not have too many dealings with Rome as it fell in 473, had been previously replaced by Ravenna as capital of the Western Empire and at the time of the birth of Islam only Constantinople and the Byzantyne Empire existed. Also, the author is right in mentioning the "oral tradition of Islam" as very few reliable written texts exist. Actually, we cannot confidently say that the Qu'ran is genuine (never mind, we would have a similar problem with Christian scriptures and the Old Testament). This link is very enlightening and it sums up what we are talking about http://www.scaruffi.com/politics/islam.html

Re: Hilarious point of view!
To be fair, Flip, could you ask Modi to stop trying to justify his opinion. You are blaming me, but he is the one who hijacked this thread, which was not supposed to be a Byzantine discussion on history, but a funny one based on a rather hilarious article regarding modern Romans attitude when facing IS threats.
Actually, you are right, Flip. I am going to leave it so that you can have more space left for those deep discussions on highly intellectual topics. I am taking a break. Bye!

Re: Hilarious point of view!
I often get accused of being childish and petulant, which of course I am! Same old questions and answers come up here, with only ever one conclusion, we are all like strangers meeting on a train that never really get to know one another and in many cases would never dream to even start a conversation with each other in the real world. Strange as it may seem however, in this case we need each other for information and advice, of which, Modi and Gala do provide a great deal. Time to start again please.
