Whats in flower in your garden now ?

Post by Angela Fuller on Mon Aug 19, 2013 8:12 am

Not being a great lover of 'bedding' type plants and lots of pots that need alot of watering, I was wondering what other plants are flowering now in your garden ?  I find this time of year the garden has litle colour and I would appreciate any recommendations.  Many thanks.

We (well me) are not very good flower people I much prefer fruit and veg... But we are getting around to flowers now and then and would like to have the time to learn and plant more. On a whim last year we bought a mandevilla not cheap by our standards and we were told not hardy... However, covered with fleece over the winter, it eventually came back to life in spring and put on lots of new leaf. Now it's bigger than ever and has lots and lots of beautiful large pink trumpet flowers - seems to be at it's peak at the moment...

.. oh yes, we too would like a passion flower here in Italy. Had one in the UK for many a year covering a horrid North wall, it flowered for ages, but did not fruit for the first time for many a year... Have seen a number here, one just last week was covered in little orange fruits, but few leaves and no flowers...

The Roses have been particularly good this year, also the lillies taht we have in pots are good; but overall our motto is 'if you can't eat it don't water it'...

Steve, I have had to look up 'Mandevilla' as I had not heard of it before.  It looks lovely in the pictures so it's going on my wish list of plants to look out for next Spring.  Flip, I agree, the roses have been really good this year, but sadly mine have gone over, may get a few more on some repeat flowering varieties come Setember.  Sadly, my lillies were eaten by the lily beetle, I must try harder next year to apply an organic spray to get rid of them.

What we do with our Roses Angela, is always dead head and prune back after flowering which seems to encourage new shoots, and also not over water as lots tend to do in the heat.

Yes Flip, I agree, dead heading and pruning back is the way to go.....unfortunately alot of the roses in the garden are the old shrub (once flowering) type, lots of once flowering ramblers and a few David Austin repeat flowering ones.  I will plant more repeat flowering come the autumn as have a few gaps that need filling.  I assume less water means deeper root growth, hence no need to water and better stronger plants....Wise words......

Raspberries, Strawberries, Blackberries & Blueberries all doing pretty well thanks to the heat and rain combo we've been having.

Raining here at last.....ground really needs it as cracked and plants dying.  No blackberries and few raspberries, no strawberries planted and blueberries need different soil so soft fruit is a no no.  Has anyone else got any other flowering plants in their gardens just now....so far we have come up with Steve's Mandevilla, Vivino's Passion flower and Flip's roses and lillies.....surely there must be more.....Battled down to compost heap with rubbish today and found convolvulus cneoreum (cant spell) in flower and some purple, begins with T, bulby clump that has been flowering for months...will look up correct name and post.....

We planted strawberries last year early on, had strawbs until around early november (only a few per day then) and up to now we are getting the same (had far too many at one point). Now eating melons and plums... Has blueberries, but they have finished for the year now, they only need ericaceous compost and try to avoid chlorinated water (let it stand a while)...

Without a shadow of a doubt roses are the stars of our garden this year.

The ones we bought in Italy however are doing much better than the ones we brought out from England.

Just out of interest Ghiro, what varieties did you bring from England that have not done well and what ones from here are doing better?
I have remembered the name of the purple flower that I can really recommend it is Tulbughia violacea and is a clump forming perennial, flowers summer and autumn, lilac purple umbels, narrow blue grey leaves Height 18 - 24". I bought apot and divided it into 3, now have 12 clumps, all flowering now.....

I thought that there were parasitic wasps that could control Lily Beetle, and here are two sites, one British, and one American.
May be useful to follow up.
It may be too early for the research to turn into useful products.

Angela.  We brought a number of dwarf rose varieties from England which, despite much TLC, have not thrived (yet?).

The ones we bought in Italy were just standard varieties and are fabulous.  Unfortunately all the labels have long since fallen off so I can't give you actual names.

Ghiro, I would think dwarf roses are grafted onto dwarfing stock (maybe even micro-propogated), if that is the case they wont want to put down deep roots so maybe that is the problem ? On trip to vets Sarnano yesterday I did pass by a beautiful Campsis, climber, a mass of large, orange, trumpet flowers and many a hibiscus and lavatera blooming away so a few more plants to add to ever growing wish list...

I only have a small courtyard, so I am a bit limited in what I can have, but the Mandevillea I planted in Spring is doing really well. Different varieties of begonia, including the "Pendullum" one are all in flower. Not very lucky with roses, I will have to do some severe pruning for next year. My neighbour's lillies did very well earlier in the season. And all the pink "Impatiens" look healthy and colourful.
