I am curious if Italians receive grants if they go to study for a degree at university. What is the Italian system like regarding this?

The fees paid depend upon the parents' income so no, not really. There can be some burary's available you can apply for but there are no subsistence grants. It is more expected that the parents pay for the university rather than the child.
