Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
Has anyone heard of this? Whilst out with friends the other nght (one a newly diagnosed diabetic) they told me re-heated pasta can prevent diabetes and is extremely good for weight loss. Having googledit briefly it appears so. Has anybody any thoughts on the subject ?

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
errr ''prevent diabetes'', rubbish!! ''good for weight loss'' duh !!
The only thing good for those to things is not stuffing your face with starchy or sugary things in the first place and take plenty of exercise. I suggest these so called benefits were read out of context.

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
No, not strictly true....the article I read resulted from research done on behalf of The UK diabetic association so has some credability I would think and wasn't a mis-quote from 'Hello' Magazine..

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
This was covered here on Abruzzolutely a few weeks ago, with subsequent link to the BBC article. I've no idea if there is any real evidence in it, but either way won't stop us eating pasta - we love it far too much!

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
The only benefit I can see in reheated pasta is that there may be less starches, but how does one reheat with Microwave, or ( and I presume this refers to plain pasta with no sauce etc) by dropping in boiling water. Whatever method it cannot possibly 'prevent' diabetes only at best reduce the harmful starches but there again quantity comes into play.
There are numerous claims as to the benefits/harms of various foodstuffs, but to get a accurate picture, there are many factors to take into consideration, to make a definitive claim that any can either benefit or harm one is naive at best.

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
Presumably type 1 diabetes, and unless you eat tons of it I cant see how reheated pasta could do anything. And why reheated, why not cold? And reheated how? Microwaved, under the grill - it seems a load of old cobblers to me.

BBC article here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-29629761 g.
Worth reading, have looked at Abruzzo site postings Steve, thx for that.

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
Some solid research there eh! control group consisting of 8 or 9 people all in their 20s or early 30s, no mention of exercise or lifestyle. Sloppy BBC journalism at it's best.

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
I have always heard that "al dente" pasta is better. In any case, this advice confirms it and it also gives some interesting and reliable information http://www.diabetesselfmanagement.com/Blog/Amy-Campbell/pasta-to-eat-or-not-to-eat/

Gala, thanks for that.....I do see it was written in 2011 though and the BBC article 2014 when the recent trial took place to reveal new findings....Your thoughts ?

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
I do not think that the BBC "experiment" is reliable. Perhaps, reheated or cold pasta is less fattening simply because it is so disgusting that you tend to eat less. Pasta in moderation, al dente and without the addition of fattening sauces or too much butter and cheese can be very healthy. Wholemeal pasta with a few drops of olive oil, chopped sage leaves topped with a tiny bit of grated Parmesan cheese, and a good salad is a great choice for lunch. Everything in moderation and combined with some type of exercise, even basic walking, is good for us. I do know quite a few Italians who eat pasta every day without getting fat....

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
I agree Gala, everything in moderation but although the BBC filmed it the research is being done by a Dr, from I think Surrey Uni and funded by Diabetes UK org' so not to be taken lightly.....I for one will not be re-heating all the pasta I cook just the leftovers.... and maybe cooking some extra for salads...Just thought it was an interesting topic for debate and probably not alot of people were aware of the findings....some good and interesting replies to the topic on the Abruzzolutely site....

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
It's amazing the insight a few posts gives to peoples eating habits ...
I don't think it can be said to be rubbish (I've not read it by the way) unless it's been disproved, but unless there is definite scientific evidence, then I think I know the world is round... As the eating cold pasta, like I said we eat loads as we love it and there is many a dish we have had where it is indeed cold! Tastes are down to personal preference and facts are facts, well until they are dis-proven, which happens quite often...

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
I did a bit of further investigation on the matter, as I still believe that a single experiment with a group of
volunteers is totally reliable; however, it looks as http://www.glycemicindex.com/ other researches have already conducted research on cooking methods and how they may affect the glycemic index (GI) of different types of food. Itis widely known that lower GI has a beneficial effect, particularly on people with overweight, diabetes and similar conditions. Here is the article I found http://www.glycemicindex.com/

Thanks Gala....another interesting read...Hopefully the 'non-believers' will read and digest and re-think their negative thoughts on this matter.

As I keep on saying, a balanced diet and moderation are the two keys to good health. This is a very helpful article: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/pyramid-full-story/

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
I must admit that Italian pasta is not my favourite dish. Far prefer Asian rice noodles, which I think are far healthier. As to cold pasta, no chance.
I love the facts in the first article below about all the additives that pasta has!!

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
Cant get Asian rice noodles without a making a 60k round trip...makes them a tad expensive......Also a texture thing, I enjoy pasta like penne as something to bite on, not just suck and swallow....Each to their own Geo.....

Just a quick scan of the pages Geo, but they seem to indicate the opposite unless you have a low gluten tolerance?

Re: Benefits of eating re-heated pasta
I agree with Steve Geo, I have looked at the first link and regular pasta rules !
What I do not know as the link is written by an American, is whether the Italians incorporate additives to their pasta too....surely not fresh pasta....maybe dried....will go look on pkt.
