Nuts....
First topic message reminder :
I have been told to lower my cholesterol by the doctor here. I already have a low cholesterol diet and have done for years and eat mainly fish and chicken. I have been sent a link to a BBC programme all about lowering cholesterol by a friend and it seems oats and certain nuts are the way to go..... However, I find nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds) very expensive to buy here, even in Eurospin ! Does anyone know of any cheap suppliers that sell big bags at a reasonable cost ? Many thx.

Gala Placidia wrote:Steve, Carrefour sells Marmite in both France and Spain. They have some jars in the "foreign products" section. Perhaps they also have them in Italy....As for nuts, I think that there has been a price increase worldwide...
Thanks again Gala we have a Carrefour somewhere here, must try to check it out, but as I say our supplier can't be bettered... Walnuts have not changed much in price for us for years. It must be well over 10 years since we started eating them every day (was not quite every day before then), strange enough with our marmite on toast... longer story how that cam about. In fact over the last two years the price of walnuts may well have dropped slightly, but guess it depends on how the weather goes... It is strange how something you do over the years either turn out to be very good for you or very bad... There are a number of things (walnuts being one) that have turned out in the press to be very good for you, long after w had started eating them on a regular basis.... Just need them to come out with a little more on copious amounts of wine....

Re: Nuts....
Back to the subject of the BBC programme, the almond supplement didn't do much good for the cholesterol levels, but the oats did. Try porage* for breakfast a few mornings a week.
On the walnut front, many years ago we had an October holiday in the Dordogne, and the walnut harvest was immense, and of high quality. Food of choice was tarte auk noix - an small open tart with caramel and walnuts.
We found that windfalls were good, and the kernal was almost spreadable. We found that these didn't keep more than 24 hours, before going mouldy. The farmers dried the whole nuts on open wire trays for a few days, so that they would keep, They sold at the roadside for a few francs a Kilo (I'm older than I look!)
Maybe a trip to France in the autumn could pay dividends, or maybe someone on the forum coul help

Sorry Angela I missed your post, re humus, yes and no.... we tried by getting sesame seeds, but it was too much trouble and little success. To be honest we don't notice a lot of difference in the taste what with the best olive oil going, our own garlic and chickpeas. Hopefully soon it will be our own lemons too .....

Re: Nuts....
Angie, glad to help. With the information you have given about your father and your sister, you do not need further investigation of your family tree. It is obvious that there is a genetic component there. The trouble with high cholesterol levels is that they are the cause of coronary artery disease and it will be most important to have this properly diagnosed and medicated. If you do all the right things, you can live a long life. This is what I intend to do... In any case, have a look at this information http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/cad/treatment and insist on seeing a specialist.Angela Fuller wrote:Gala, I do thank you for your advice, and due to taking statins in the past I too have had problems of the sort you describe and a few others. It is not very easy to re-trace my family tree on my mothers side as she died when I was 3yrs old (nothingto do with hearty stuff but the dreaded Ca.) Father had a number of MI's and was waiting for a by-pass op when he sadly passed away before he was called in for said op. The few family members I do know are not that easily contactable but my one and only sibling has recently been diagnosed with high cholesterol and BP. She is 2 yrs older than me (57) and is a vegetarian, exercises daily, carries no extra weight and was told her high levels were probably hereditary and to get any siblings checked out asap. I have only been registered with my current Dr for a month...I will continue with his treatment advice and return for more bloods to see what improvements, if any have been made. In the meantime I will buy some Omega 3 supplements, take the meds he has prescribed, stick to a good diet and dig deeper re: family tree and health issues. Pulses boiling as I type and I am looking forward to my 'summer salad' with a slice of integrale bread and marmite ! Thx again Gala, I do, as always appreciate your input and learn from you. Angie.Gala Placidia wrote:Angie, I do understand your doubts and worries. In spite of my high cholesterol levels, which could not be controlled through diet, I could not take statins (after trying three different varieties) because all of these were creating big problems with my liver. I decided to continue with my diet, but I really needed more help, as my heart and circulation were suffering. I had a few angina episodes, which were controlled with nitroglycerin... But the outlook was not nice. I started questioning myself why I had all those problems and started going through my family tree. The majority of my ancestors, on both father and mother's side had all died of cardiac arrest or stroke, quite a few at a young age. Then, I found out that one of my aunts, a nun who followed a very Montcalm life, ate almost nothing, weighed less than 45 kilos, suffered from extremely high cholesterol levels, which could not be controlled through a strict diet and had just been put on a new generation statin and her levels were improving dramatically. I decided to write down those details, including a mini family tree, went to see my doctor and asked her for a full check up and diagnose from a specialist. I endured all sorts of tests, including being tied up for 24 hours to a machine that recorded everything my heart did. The specialist confirmed the genetic origin of my problems, put me on specific medication to lower cholesterol and triglycerides plus a new generation statin (no side effects this time) and advised me to continue with a diet, loose some weight ( loosing weight helps) and take an Omega 3 supplement. The angina episodes diminished and now I simply carry the nitroglycerin in my purse, just in case. Heart function has dramatically improved and I am ready to live quite a few more years. In any case, my advice would be as follows and I would like Ghiro to check if it is correct:1- do the family tree study to see if there is a genetic link.2- put yourself on a strict, but sensible diet. Something like this http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/in-depth/cholesterol/art-20045192?pg=13- take an omega 3 supplement4- after all this, have a blood count and ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist who will conduct the necessary tests and give his advice. Then, it will be up to you to decide.Pulses are excellent and there is a basic summer recipe, which is healthy, delicious and cool. You can use any type of pulses you may prefer. Simply boil the pulses, allow them to cool. In a salad bowl, mix them with finely chopped onions, garlic, tomatoes, cucumber, plenty of parsley and mint. Season with a small amount of olive oil and lots of lemon juice (minimum 3 lemons). Salt and pepper according to taste.Angie, please look after yourself

Re: Nuts....
Fortunately for us our friends whom we come to know as they live here in Italy only 500M+ away from us drive every year back to the UK for winter/xmas and come back with our supplies. Like Modi it is probably the only thing we have not adjusted to by using something Italian instead. But if it came to it we would either pay the price or (dare I say it) give it up and turn to something else.....

I have a large food processor, which I hardly use. On the other hand, I have two Braun Minipimers, one at home and the other one in Italy, which I use all the time.

Thanks Geo, have you used these and if so what's delivery like (yep I know what it's like in general here). At €3.50 a jar it's not worth burning out the hand blender...

Re: Nuts....
Steve. I have used them many times, but usually order the min amount of E99, so get the free delivery. It comes by express courier, either the next day or the day after, so quite happy with the service. If you include rice in the E99, then it is not covered by the free delivery, but is if the other items reach that total.

Thanks Geo, shame they don't do Marmite as well....

I was brought up on Bovril, can't stand Marmite. Don't think you can have a mug of hot Marmite when sitting in mid winter fishing off Dover breakwater for cod!!!!
Re: Nuts....
