Diesel prices in England £1.42, France, €1.39/€1.40.............here in Italy, €1.60/€1.75 !!!!!

Yup!  And off the motorways in France we found it at €1.33.  When driving down we always fill up before crossing the border out of France.

Yes, definitely cheaper in France.

The main reason is that the Italian Gov, slaps a surcharge on to help 'fund' a relief fund for natural disasters, like the flooding in Genoa, earthquake in Emilia Romana etc. not sure how much of this actually gets to help the rebuilds but one hopes that it is going to a good cause.

Yes, Italian taxes on petrol are amongst the highest in the EU, together with the Netherlands. I heard that one of these exceptional taxes, granted that it was about 1 cent, was related to the Italy-Libya conflict prior to WW2!
